MY STORY
My name is Rich Moldstad
I am the president and owner of Compliance Plus Consulting and hold a Bachelors of Science degree in Public Administration from Indiana University - Bloomington. After graduating from IU,
I pursued my longtime desire of serving in a law enforcement capacity, investing eight years as
a police officer within both state and local law enforcement agencies.
Observing that trucking enforcement was becoming a much larger focus of both the federal government and state enforcement agencies, I then became a Special Agent with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (formerly Office of Motor Carriers). After completing the rigorous training academy at the Transportation Safety Institute, I then began my federal enforcement career conducting compliance investigations and audits of motor carriers within
the states of Kansas and Indiana.
Needing a career position that did not require extensive travel away from home due to my wife’s health at that time, I was recruited to become the Safety Director of a 240-truck refrigerated fleet which was experiencing higher than average loss rates (both auto liability and worker injuries) resulting from a weak regulatory compliance/safety program. My responsibilities included the hiring and training of drivers, development of effective safety policies and procedures, ensuring OSHA and maintenance shop safety, conducting accident/worker injury investigations, and the development of innovative loss prevention awareness programs.
Under my guidance, this motor carrier received the Truckload Carriers Association’s (formerly TCC) coveted “Grand Champion Safety Award” resulting from my development and implementation of innovative safety awareness programs, ultimately attaining a level of safety culture rarely achieved within the trucking industry.
My career successes quickly came onto the radar of insurance organizations involved in the promotion of trucking safety and the prevention of loss for their insureds. My experience/training as a Special Agent with the FMCSA, award-winning trucking safety director achievements, and law enforcement background created a rather unique set of qualifications not often seen in trucking safety professionals.
During the following 25 years, I had the pleasure of working with several thousand trucking companies while serving as a trucking safety consultant for a very large PEO organization having a large trucking client base, in addition to working for highly ranked insurance brokers including the Lockton Companies, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., and most recently serving 14 years with Cottingham & Butler’s Safety Management Services Company.
During my extensive career, I have had the opportunity to work with and assist several thousand trucking companies from big to small, and every size in-between. Very few consultants have had the opportunity to assist this number of trucking operations, always learning from each organization concerning strengths and weaknesses of their unique safety programs.
Whether a carrier has four or four-thousand units, I continue to invest the same enthusiasm and energy to not only identify areas where a client’s safety program requires improvement, but to then use my instructional ability to train motor carrier personnel to be the most effective they can be.
