DOT AUDIT REVIEW
Is your organization prepared for a DOT Compliance Review audit? Do the staff assigned to maintain DOT compliance within your organization actually know how to interpret and implement all of the many complicated Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations simply because you assigned him/her with that critical job responsibility?
The time to ask these questions is not shortly after the FMCSA (or their State partner) has called to schedule a compliance review audit in the next week! With a mock-FMCSA compliance review, you won’t be wondering whether your safety and regulatory compliance program is “good enough” to achieve/maintain a Satisfactory safety rating.
Too often over the years I have found company owners who simply trusted that those they have assigned the responsibility of maintaining DOT compliance actually have the extensive knowledge and understanding of complex and ever-changing regulations, only to find there was a misunderstanding of drug/alcohol requirements, maintenance file documentation, or any number of critical violations that can occur.
Whether large or small, every motor carrier can benefit by annually having a mock audit completed by an outside “set of eyes” to know that their regulatory compliance programs are ready for the unexpected.
If your company is facing an upcoming FMCSA Compliance Review audit, I can meet with you ahead of time to review what you should expect, what you will be asked during the audit, and help you identify any areas that can be corrected prior to the actual audit being completed.
Compliance Plus Consulting can also assist a motor carrier by personally participating during your FMCSA Compliance audit as a consultant to your organization while the FMCSA investigators are on-site or conducting an off-site review. Acting on your behalf, I can help to show that your company is serious about operating within compliance and that if areas of non-compliance are identified, my involvement will indicate that you are willing to obtain outside guidance and training in order to correct any deficiencies identified. Corrective action plans can also then be developed should violations be identified by the FMCSA.
SAFETY RATING UPGRADE
The DOT and roadside enforcement agencies actively use the CSA/SMS scoring systems to identify motor carriers for enforcement action to include civil fines and penalties. Shippers and freight brokers also utilize these scores to evaluate and select motor carriers to work with. Insurance providers also utilize these safety scoring systems to determine whether they will even consider offering a motor carrier an insurance quote, and at what price. Compliance Plus Consulting can evaluate your scores and develop proactive programs to improve the company’s CSA/SMS scores.
CSA SCORE IMPROVEMENT
A FMCSA “Satisfactory” safety rating is critical for any motor carrier that desires to haul for the best shippers, to obtain affordable insurance rates, and to attract the most safety conscious drivers. If you have received a downgraded rating, let Compliance Plus Consulting help you develop and implement corrective actions that will move your company towards a rating upgrade.
OPERATIONS DEPARTEMENT AND STAFF TRAINING
Compliance Plus Consulting can conduct innovative training with a motor carrier’s staff that will educate each employee regarding the real costs of accidents and workers’ compensation claims, explain how the company is performing in the area of CSA/SMS scoring compared to its peers, and will assist each employee to understand that safety is a key part of their job, regardless of what position they may hold.
During my 35 year career in trucking safety and enforcement, it is clear a company can have in place a qualified safety/driver training department, but when the rest of the company is not on board with a strong culture of safety, regulatory compliance and the prevention of loss will rarely be achieved.
